Preparing for Tree Emergencies This Fall

Preparing for Tree Emergencies This Fall

The harsh conditions of winter can do a number on your trees. Even in states like Texas, it’s important to prepare your trees for cold, frosts, and more recently, snow. Follow these tips to prepare for tree emergencies this fall.

Rake the Leaves

Fallen leaves may look pretty, but they may foster mold and disease in your yard. Since leaves tend to accumulate under and near the trees they come from, those areas are most likely to suffer from a mold or fungal problem. Rake up those leaves to keep your tree’s roots happy and healthy.

Fertilize Your Trees

Winter in Texas may not involve massive amounts of snow, but we have seen freezing temperatures and ice in the last several years. During these times, trees may struggle to get enough nutrients, especially if they don’t go dormant in time for winter. Feeding them with fertilizer in the fall will help them have enough energy reserves to fall back on.

Insulate With Mulch

Mulch isn’t just for keeping grass away from the base of your tree. It’s also an important tool for keeping tree roots insulated against frost and freezing temperatures outdoors. Your trees will be much happier with a layer of mulch at their base.

Remove Ball Moss

Ball moss is often mistaken for a parasite, but just because it’s not leaching nutrients from your trees doesn’t make it harmless. Heavy ball moss can add weight to your tree, taxing the strength of support branches. If any of those branches become fragile, the added weight may cause them to break.

Get Your Trees Inspected

The most important thing you can do to prepare for tree emergencies this fall is have a professional arborist inspect your property. They can assess whether you should remove a tree now before it becomes a hazard.

If you do end up needing storm damage tree removal near Austin, TX, give Sid Mourning Tree Services a call. We’re professional arborists who want the best for both you and your trees.
